THE SPIRIT of “Les Entretiens” OUTSIDE FRANCE
Since 2013, as a sign of the success and influence of Les Entretiens, a number of francophone and francophile personalities have expressed an interest in organising events outside France in the same spirit as Les Entretiens, which take place at the Abbaye de Royaumont and the Collège des Bernardins.
Les Entretiens hors de France convey the same French spirit of enlightened debate and freedom of speech. They help to advance ideas on powerful themes that resonate with the issues of the countries in which they take place and are linked to the spirit of the Enlightenment and Francophilia.
Since 2018, ‘Les Entretiens’ and the local organisers have formalised their approach and signed an ‘agreement of spirit’ which sets out an obligation of quality, eclecticism, openness of debate, and expression under translation in at least two languages: the local language and French.

The very first edition of Les Entretiens de New York ’The New Violence: The impact of online disinformation on Democracy’ took place on Thursday 16 March 2023, in the salons of the Consulate General of France in New York. Organised by the Tocqueville Foundation in the spirit of the Entretiens de Royaumont, under the patronage of the Consulate General of France in New York, the event focused on the central issue of the spread of violence, which is
all too often becoming a response to disagreement in our democratic societies. Not only do we need to understand the causes of this new, global phenomenon, we also need to find solutions. Failure to do so could undermine the very democratic system that is already under threat.
Leading specialists, intellectuals and professionals have shared their insights, based on practical experience, research and analysis of the sources of this groundswell and the responses to it.
