The spirit of “Les Entretiens” in France
The aim of ‘Les Entretiens’ is to encourage the emergence of new ideas, to enrich and nurture debates and, in a calm and eclectic atmosphere and in a spirit of total freedom of speech, to enlighten decisions to set France and humanity on the path to growth and influence.
‘Les Entretiens’ encourage the exchange of experiences, the comparison of approaches, the sketching out of ideas and structured solutions, in an atmosphere of serenity and conviviality. The event also provides an opportunity to get to know new profiles of talented personalities with original ideas and disruptive backgrounds who personify France today – women and men of all generations and from all ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds.
From 2010 onwards, Les Entretiens decided to support, but not organise, initiatives in France in the same spirit, the ‘French spirit’, that of the ‘Enlightenment’.
Each year, events that follow this approach and are in keeping with the spirit of Les Entretiens are supported as part of ‘’agreements of spirit‘’, which do not include any financial element and which set an obligation of quality, eclecticism, openness of debate and expression in order to benefit from the support, brand and image of Les Entretiens.
Building on the editions it has supported around the world since 2013, Les Entretiens has decided since 2021 to also support initiatives emerging in the territories. As with events organised outside France, local organisers sign an ‘agreement of spirit’ with Les Entretiens, which sets out an obligation of quality, eclecticism, openness of debate and expression in order to benefit from the support, brand and image of ‘Les Entretiens’.
The first edition of the Entretiens supported by ‘Les Entretiens’ took place in Nice on 15 October 2021. Organised by the Nice-Matin group at the Mediterranean University Centre in Nice, the theme of the ‘Entretiens de Nice’ was ‘Territories: when will the Jacobin state come to an end?
On 27 June 2022, the ‘Entretiens de l’Ecole des Officiers de la Gendarmerie Nationale’ (EOGN) were launched. Now an annual event, the aim is to offer the 350 gendarmerie officer cadets, as well as students from the French Republic’s grandes écoles, in particular the institutions of the Institut National des Services Publics (INSP) invited by the EOGN – the Ecole Nationale de la Magistrature, the Ecole Nationale des Services Vétérinaires, the Ecole Polytechnique, the Ecole de l’Air, the Ensta, etc. – a day of reflection and discussion on the major issues of the day. This first edition brought together exceptional testimonies on ‘the values of the French Republic and the notion of Authority’.
The second EOGN, devoted to the theme of ‘Anthropology and the Digital Age’, brought together more than 500 gendarmerie officer cadets as well as representatives and students from the Institut National des Services Publics.
The third edition, in 2024, was an even greater success.
Hosted by David Abiker, and with the participation of some exceptional speakers, the day provided an opportunity to question and reflect on the impact of digital technology on both human beings and human organisational models, at a time when technological progress is transforming our lives as much as it is transforming the world. At the heart of the issues at stake was a reflection on the natural link, as much an observation as a duty, between anthropology and the digital age, enriched by the depth of vision of the speakers who enlightened our minds in the magical setting of the Collège des Bernardins.
